Travertine

Travertine is a sedimentary limestone rock characterized by layering determined by variations in color and porosity; its colors range from milky white to walnut with different shades ranging from yellow to red.

This very sturdy and often polishable rock is used for both interior and exterior coatings such as floors, curbs and sometimes sculptures; one of its most recent exterior applications is the recently restored colonnade of St. Peter’s Square.

The largest sediment of this natural stone in Italy is in Tivoli, in the province of Rome, but there are also smaller ones in Tuscany, Umbria and Marche; in the world, however, deposits are beginning to be exploited in Africa, more specifically in Tunisia and in South America in Chile.
